3 moves for a successful business

Ecommerce fundamentals

By Santiago Cardenas

Every day more businesses are popping up, filled with self-starters and motivators desperate to make a name for themselves and to have the luxury to call themselves their own boss. In our current life cycle, ecommerce websites have become the base structure for any business. And if you don't have one, you might as well pack your bags, get a time machine and travel back in time. Whether you are selling a specific item, clothing, or providing a service online it's important to have these 3 main goals in mind. The first goal is gaining traffic, the second one is maximizing conversions, and the third maximizing revenue. Throughout this article I am going to describe each of these three goals and how one particular company we all know is using them. So, let's get started, shall we?

Getting Attention to your website

The first thing you have to do is focus on driving traffic to your website. Driving traffic is just another fancy way of saying getting people to visit your website. Because without visitors there is no chance of making a sale. Companies nowadays have the opportunity to use various strategies to bring in customers. Let's start off with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which has to do with improving your website to rank higher on search engines like Google when potential buyers are searching for similar products. Another strategy used is social media marketing, the use of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms to advertise their store and products in order to reach a larger audience. Another strategy commonly used is Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising this enables companies to place ads on social media platforms or search engines, only paying when a user clicks on their ad. This guarantees that the company reaches customers who are actively searching for their products or services via keywords. And also, don’t forget about word of mouth, which happens when someone suggests your websites for products or services.

Turning viewers into buyers

The second objective is to turn your website visitors into potential customers, which in ecommerce means persuading consumers to make a purchase. It's important that businesses focus on a few crucial areas when it comes to this because it can maximize conversions. One of them, being the User Experience (UX) meaning in simplest terms just make sure your website is easy to understand, navigate and use whether it be on a desktop or mobile device. Following the UX it is also important to build confidence in the purchasing process by having safe and secure payment methods, product reviews and clear return policies. And also, it is very important to have a clear Call to Action (CTAs), like the well-known Buy Now or Add to Cart button, this promotes prompt action and directs customers to finish their purchase.

Increasing sales from each customer

Making a single transaction is only one aspect of maximizing income; thriving ecommerce companies use tactics to raise client spending and promote recurring business. Upselling and cross-selling are common strategies that involve suggesting higher end or complementary products in addition to the customer's initial selection. Sending personalized emails with discounts or suggestions based on prior purchases is another important way that email marketing promotes repeat business. Furthermore, loyalty programs that provide discounts, points, or other incentives to loyal customers keep them interested and coming back for more.

Real Life Example

Amazon is a prime example of a business using these e-commerce tactics. One of the largest e-commerce sites, it began selling books in a garage and has now become quite successful at increasing visitors using a mix of PPC and SEO. This is because their product listings are so well optimized, that their products frequently rank at the top of Google searches. Amazon also attracts millions of visitors by using social media marketing to advertise sales events like Prime Day on social media platforms.

Amazon's user experience is an excellent example of efficiency when it comes to turning visitors into customers. Both desktop and mobile users will find their website very easy to use, with clear product descriptions. With features on each product like customer reviews, transparent return policies, safe payment methods, and even the ability to pay over time, Amazon has truly reassured its customers throughout their purchasing process. Their powerful calls to action, such as the Buy Now and Add to Cart buttons, promote prompt purchases.

Amazon is also a leader in maximizing revenue by using upselling and cross-selling techniques. When you add a product to your cart, they suggest related items or offer a bundle at a discount, increasing the average order value. They also send out personalized email based on consumers browsing and purchasing history, often including recommendations or special offers. Finally, Amazon with its Prime membership has also created a loyalty program, offering special deals, free shipping and same day delivery options to keep customers coming back and spending more.

Conclusion

The key to success for any ecommerce business is a strong focus on these three goals: gaining traffic, maximizing conversions, and maximizing revenue. By strategically attracting visitors, turning them into customers, and encouraging higher-value purchases, businesses can grow in the competitive world of online retail. By adopting tactics used by successful companies like Amazon, you can build an ecommerce store that not only attracts customers but also converts and retains them for long-term success.
